De-Influencing Yourself
Breaking the spell of influencer culture and regaining power over your life
Under the influence of influencers?
2024 was the year I decided I was going to de-influence my life. On a random Friday, I jumped on to Instagram and noticed that I did not recognize my feed. And it is called a feed on purpose because it’s a way to create addiction. More on that later. There were so many ads and posts from accounts that I had no recollection that I followed to begin with. Anxiety sparked as I began to scroll. The scrolling quickly turned into doom scrolling. I asked myself…
Why am I following these people?
Honestly, I couldn’t answer the question. Rather than the anxious energy demotivating me, it fueled me. It made me angry. That anger drove me to click on that little word on my profile that said - Following. I sorted the accounts from oldest to latest. Then, I started going through every account, which took hours because I was following over 3,500 accounts. Like a surgeon, I meticulously began to unfollow all the accounts that no longer aligned with me. It was rough and it brought up lots of emotions that I did not expect.
It was as if I had cracked open a time capsule. I could map where I was on the journey of my life based on who I had followed. All the exs, industries I was a part of, interests I had, and aspirations I held came flooding back. The grief found its way into my heart and I started to cry.
“Without doubt, the most common weakness of all human beings is the habit of leaving their minds open to the negative influence of other people.”
It is called being under the influence for a reason.
Ever heard the proverb that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with? The digital world is no different. Due to the nature of the digaverse - digital universe, you aren’t dealing with five people, you are dealing with exponentially more. And these people are watching you…
They are studying you in order to craft products to sell to you. This is my area of expertise, and my twelve years in the field of marketing prove that. Marketers are watching you, and they are doing everything in their power to sell you stuff you do not need but will definitely want because you are influenced into wanting them.
Scrolling on social media endlessly or watching videos on YouTube can create a hypnotic, suggestive state. You are lulled into a false sense of comfort and vulnerability because of all of that delicious dopamine being released. A spell has been cast… and you are under the spell. It could feel like you are powerless. I am here to tell you that you are a sovereign being, and it is now time to regain your power.

WHY DE-INFLUENCE?
Because you want to…
- Feel human again.
- Save money by not buying things you don’t need or want.
- Reduce stress and anxiety in your daily life.

- Get out from under negative influences.
